Greetings all,

I am a novice boater and am in need of some/any advice. I recently bought an older boat and it did just fine when i was test driving it. Took it out to the lake on my own. Engine started fine but after running for about 15 minutes, motor will not start back up. It cranks but will not start. After the drive home, engine started up fine again.

Took it back out to the lake and same thing happened again. Took it back home and then started just fine again. I want to learn how to do everything myself but I don't even know where to start.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

Try posting on the evinrude/johnson forum they will have good advice.
But word of advice from me, my 88 johnson did that when i first bought it. I always called it a "hot start" problem since the motor would start when cold but not warmed up, anyways all i did was replace the spark plugs and it fixed it. Make sure you are using the correct starting procedure and you don't have to choke it as much on a warm start or else you will just flood your motor. Also i would replace the fuel line and primer bulb to make sure its functioning correctly.

Get a compression tester and a spark gap tester at the auto store.
Do the compression test.
Warm it up on the hose and see if it can be induced to quit, then do a spark test, set the gap to 7/16th inch.
Look under the flywheel, see any melted plastic dripping down?
