93 3.0L Yamaha/GM-Merc I/O wont run.. Im lost plz help

Hi guys.. First off I appreciate any direction you can give me..

Let me start with some back story..

Got the boat not running, oil full of water and what seemed to be bad everything.

What ive done and in the order it happened

I pulled the Head and had and reworked it, replaced head gasket, used old pushrods, springs, and rockers as they looked fine.

replaced Manifold and riser with Mercruiser parts. welded a bracket for alternator and throttle linkage to bolt up. of course replaced all associated gaskets.

replaced carb with used ebay carb with all new parts.. FI is more my style but i know enough to be dangerous with a carb.

replaced Distributor pickup and ign module with the "Car" equivalent from oreilly's.. s10 parts i think they were. also replaced plugs, cap, rotor.

Yesterday morning I had this thing Running 90%.. bogged a little when snapping full throttle but shortly caught up with itself. I had it running best with air/fuel screw 5 full turns out.. seemed high but it worked.. I have no reference for ign timing as all of the marks are gone from the pulley and motor mount but like i said it was running great for a couple hours. took it about 2 miles out and back full throttle and got all my shift linkage back on par.. shifting good, and where it is supposed to.. idling ok.. then out of nowhere it died at an idle. .. since then it doesnt even try to start.. just cranks and cranks.. I have since tried to replace the plugs again.. Checked spark, and fuel.. getting both... tried starting with carb and choke cleaner with no change.. it still sounds like it has compression.. its not starting like a car does with broken timing belt or anything.. everything seems normal other than it wont run.. again i appreciate any advice.. sorry for the long read but i wanted to give as much relevant info i could. thanks!

Check to see if the rotor is spinning around under cap. I had a truck that the distributer shaft broke got spark but dist never turn also oil fill cap look inside see if the rockers are moving also check voltage to coil good luck

Since you say you have fuel and fire........ next is to check compression and see what your numbers are.

What exactly do you have? Post up some serial numbers. If it is the GM 3.0l then "car" parts won't work. The only time they were used in a car is in the 60's for a couple years in the 2.5l version.

well guys I appreciate the replies.. I ended up needing another ignition module.. the new part failed.. it had spark but was very weak..
since ive had such a hard time finding parts for this yamaha stern drive I wanted to post that there are car alternatives that will work.. I will post oreillys part# when I return home..

Why do you have GM in the title if you have a Yamaha?

Its the same gm block that pretty much everybody uses. Merc, yamaha, etc

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... But Only the Long Block,...

Ignition, Induction, 'n All the accessories are Very different,...

Thanks! And yes it seems all the accessories are very different and very unavailable for the yamaha. Ive managed to piece a working motor back together using an array of dif brand parts though.. ran it about 10 miles yesterday.. dialed in at a whopping 36 mph. Lol

Actually the ignition is the Delco EST ignition, the same as Mercruiser. Uses the same ignition module.

As new as I am at this I/O stuff, isn't this a bit dangerous?

No, they are all sealed units now a days.

Before I forget the ign module is OReilly # CBE28.. itll save u 75$ in replacement.

Did you replace the purple resistor wire used with old points/external resistor coil, when you changed distributor pickup, ignition module?

I think if you have a purple/red wire going to coil, then the wire was intended for external resistor coil, and you may have to change the wire from purple on alternator to coil, and the coil has to be changed (if it hasn't already) to an internal resistor coil, to work with new pickup/module
