Alright I'm trying to sell this boat and I don't think it wants to be sold it started getting hot on the first sea trial so I changed both water pumps upper and lower to guarantee it wouldn't be an issue (spending 80 to get 3400 is worth it) it still heats up at low rpm in the water but holds temp on muffs and runs fine about 3k rpm in the water (assuming there's an improper seal somewhere I'll track that down this weekend)

The issue is it has a slight miss at idle and cold starts come with very low neutral rpms 650ish but as it heats up the rpms come up to normal about 950 in neutral also when it's cool it dogs out bad at WOT from a slow roll it revs up digs in and jacks the bow into the air but takes forever to get on plane. When it warms up a little it takes under 3 seconds to get on plane it's great. If it gets too warm (200ish I never let it get past that on the gauge and I kill it instead of run it hard to cool down and let it float for a bit while I fish and it cools down with air) the engine refuses to restart till it hits 160 or less on the temp gauge. If I try it any hotter it cranks slowly then a little faster then full speed cranking as the temp drops but refuses to start. The compression is great 145-155 all cylinders tested this spring when I put new plugs in. No milky oil anywhere all seals are good. Fresh water boat no major internal corrosion. I drained the tank completely this spring and put stabilizer and non ethanol 91 in the tank and did both fuel filters so no bad gas issue. The carb may be messed up a little but it runs fine warm just not cold or hot so I cant see that being the real problem. Is this a timing issue? It had good spark in the spring so I didn't replace the cap and rotor or wires just the plugs could the other things go bad in the first half of the season? I've never adjusted the timing as it always starts fine and runs so if it ain't broke don't fix it but I'm beginning to think it may be either to advanced or too retarded and that's why it only runs great warm? Trying to get ideas to check before I take the 20 minute drive to mess with it on Sunday. Thanks in advance.

Engine Model# 302bmramh
Prop 15.5x17p
Recently overhauled outdrive new seals and gears.
Fresh plugs, filters, water pumps, gas, oil, no t-stat water flows through engine freely with garden hose connected to raw water feed hose, fresh water only, usually in water all season pulled a month ago when issues started.

Thanks Bondo, I guess I should ask since its a marine carb can I just pull it and stick it in a bath of cleaner for a couple days? Or do I have to rebuild it like a car carburetor?

Ayuh,.... All carbs need to be torn down, then cleaned, then reassembled, with fresh gaskets,.....

Ok probably doesn't need the carb rebuilt I checked the idle mixture screws they were set at 2.25 turns out on both sides the holley is supposed to be set at 3/4 turn that explains my rough idle and lack of power in take off while running great at WOT

Ayuh,..... Rough idle maybe, lack of hole shot is more likely the power valve/ Acc. pump,....

Alright I'm just plain dumbfounded I got the carb issues cleared up it was all misadjusted now its set to factory initial specs and it can idle at 550 in neutral so I set it to 650 in gear and went at the timing it was set at 12 degrees btdc. I went and slowly turned it down to 0btdc and it didn't want to run it started seriously shaking and clunking turned it back up it smoothed out a little around 4 degrees but had a slight knock went back to 12 and figured I'd see where the idle dropped from too much advance I got it all the way out to what is assume to be near 40 degrees btdc and it was still Idling up and running smoother the further I went. I wasn't going to go any further so never got it high enough to die from advance put it back where it was at 12 degrees because it runs there docked it and figured I'd ask the gurus. What did the previous owner do to this poor thing? I'll assume this is not good. It seems to me like he stabbed the distributor off a few teeth can you do that on these engines?

So I googled pictures and I am certain mine is wrong. My two connectors face toward the stern and a little toward the engine. All the pictures show the wires facing outward. So how the heck is this engine running?
