Every once in a while my 92 Evinrude XP will just die, almost as if the key was turned off. It has did this 3 times now and I have not got it narrowed down. The first time I messed with the kill switch for a few minutes and then it kicked right off. The second and the third time I did the same thing but it did not start. I then pulled the cover and wiggled around with the switch under the shift linkage. It busted right off. I dont know what it is I do to make it start. To clarify, it will turn over but it acts like it does not get fire. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

I think the switch under the shift linkage you're talkin' about is the Shift Interrupter Switch. When operating properly, it momentarily kills the three starboard cylinders when shifting from forward to neutral. You might jumper around it and see if that solves the problem.

c/6
Hooty

I have the same exact problem with my 95 175 and i think i have narrowed the problem down to a short in the wiring harness from the motor to the controlls, but i'm not sure yet. i've replaced every thing on the engine so i've ruled that out. If you find your problem it would be more than appreciated if you could post the fix.

I will let you know when I find it. It does not happen that often. About every 5 trips to the lake but it is a little nerving when it does happen.I am still not sure what exactly is the cause yet. I also had a similiar problem with the tilt and trim. I have about 2 full days in chasing wires. I finally found that the relays were not getting good contact with the plug. I had to slightly bend the tabs on the relays. That fixed it.
