I purchased a 1992 Mercury 60hp 3cylinder motor, runs great, but have a fitting on the side of #1 piston that shoots water out of it and dont have a clue what it is for.Its just left(looking from the rear)of the top spark plug, and inside the wrap around case for the motor. Can anyone tell me why, what for or anything.

I am not God, but could it be the pee hole for your water pump? If so it probably should have a tube routing the water to a hole in the motor shroud. Maybe the tube fell off? Stu

It sounds as though it is the pressure relief valve. Water should not be coming out of there. Either the valve has stuck open, the diaphragm is torn, or you have a serious blockage in your waterways (not likely). Get yourself a service manual and fix it yourself (should be an easy job as long as it is not the latter) or take your motor for repair.

I asked a mercury dealer what it was and was told it is a pressure gage fitting.I was also told that a plug was my best bet.Does this sound right?

If it's a pressure gauge fitting, you best bet is to install a pressure gauge. Don't rely on the pee hole to tell you if your water pump is working. They can be deceiving.
