Hello All,
I just bought an 88 Checkmate Predictor with a 92 Mercury 115 outboard on it. When I purchased the boat the previous owner told me he was starting to experience problems with the tilt motor. I was anxious to get it in the water so I removed the 6 inch Jack plate that was there and replaced it with a CMC external trim/tilt Jack plate. Not a big deal to do, even for me, being an electrician and a back yard mechanic on cars. Everything is cool with that.
The issue I am having a problem with is starting. When I turn my key on Im getting the buzzing sound. After the boat starts, the buzzer stops, everything is cool. Im experiencing a rough idle. When I pop it in Gear it stalls. I can restart it and after the second or third time I get moving again. If it takes more then 3 times I lose the power it seems, to the ignition switch. No buzzer, no attempt to start. If I open the clam shell and disconnect the 10a fuse feeding the ignition and plug it back in, it returns to normal. Im not doing this repeatedly. I did this on one trip out, and to get her back to the dock. There is obviously a problem so she is back on the trailer and Im on here looking for help. I have read several posts about what the buzzer is actually for and what other people have done with similar problems, but I was hoping to have some light shed on my problem. Im not sure if the two are related but any help in trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated. I have ordered a repair/maintenance manual on my motor, but unfortunatly I havent received it yet. Thanks Guys!

Sounds like a bad connection. Probably right at that fuse since you can temporarily fix it by monkeying with it. You should troubleshoot with a schematic and voltmeter.

Re: 92 Mercury 115

Found a ground underneath by the battery thats barely making connection and crappy connection at that. I repaired it and gonna try it out tomorrow. The ground ties into a bundle and heads up and out to the motor. Think this could be the issue. Thanks for your help.
