when i run my moter mostly at top to medium speed sometimes it just shuts down, almost like its running out of gas. it starts right back up but will not go any faster than idle speed. sometimes if you run the moter long enough it will be just fine sometimes it just wont go past idle speed. I ve replaced the plugs, and filters and its still doing this any ideas???

The primer bulb test would eliminate the fuel pump as a problem. May be a sticky float/valve problem in the carb(s) or some crud plugging a jet. Have you dropped the bowl lately and given the innards a bath in carb cleaner?

i dont think its a fuel pump problem i had that fixed last yr it did go. this motor has a 3 curb system doesnt it take all 3 to malfunction to shut down? wondering im not the best mechanic unfortunately although i can fix most anything execpt this problem. any more info would be great. Have a thought, could it be the power pack?

Re: 92 mariner quits??

Instant shutdown always sounds electrical to me. You say "almost like it's running out of gas"; but that would be a more gradual thing, like sputtering and giving up. Which is it? If instant, then try the basic electrical things: wires to/from coil and distributor, coil, etc. I suppose a hot coil could have this kind of effect. If it's gradual, then see all the other posts about fuel-related problems at speed: could be a fuel hose collapsing, an leak in a fuel hose; a vaccuum leak. I'd look for something of this sort that might be caused by a hot engine. Next time it happens, check for compression, too?

its more instant shut off than anything else. I m starting to think its the powerpack, but is there anyway of telling this unless it totally breaks down? or could it be something a little more simple please help
