91 Yamaha 200 won't start

Motor won't start replaced battery and took off<br />starter and had tested. Tested fine. Anyone have any ideas what else it could be. Hasn't been running the greatest alot of hesitation. Put in neutral and died wouldn't start. Replaced battery started but ran for short period then would not start again.

Is it turning over? Do you have the emergency shut off key in the knock? and are you sure it is in neutral?

The boat is in neutral and not sure what you mean about the emergency key. It is not turning over it just clicks. I am wondering if it is something in the ignition my key is turning rather strange.

Clicks at the key or clicks under the cowling?

It clicks under the cowling I know the starter comes up but doesn't turn the flywheel.

You need to test the voltage at the starter solenoid (the thing that clicks in the engine when you try and start it) and at the starter terminal. It sounds like you have a bad connection. Get a wrench and make sure the battery terminals are tight (every time I undo my battery I have to tighten it twice and clean the terminals before the engine will start) and that the solenoid and starter connections are tight and not corroded. Also check the main ground connection on the engine (where the black ground wire from the battery attaches to the engine). My guess is that somewhere you will find a loose ground or corroded terminal connection.

That is the same opionion I got from the guy that<br />tested my starter. I will check out your suggestions this weekend and let you know. Thanks for everyone's help.

A friend looked at the motor and he cannot turn the flywheel manually does this mean the motor is locked up?

That is potentially bad but you need to confirm it. Is the gearcase in neutral (can you spin the prop in both directions?). Is the starter gear jammed into the flywheel locking it up? Pull all the spark plugs and see if you can move the flywheel by hand, if not peer into the spark plug holes with a flashlight and see it you can see anything that looks melted or broken. I'm hoping for something simple.

I know that it isn't the starter wheel because the wheel moves up and down when I try and start it. I am hoping it is something simple.
