1rst it is electric start.
It has a lot of hrs on it.
Normal procedure pump the ball till its stiff, lift the throttle to open carb, push key in to choke, turn over she starts!
Lately, this doesn't always happen!
New plugs (NGK)
Sometimes, it starts as discribed above.
Sometimes it spins like it should and eventually starts,(lot of smoke though) like it was flooded, this clears up and it runs fine.
Sometimes it barks, but does not start! Hit the key and the starter kicks out like it didn't engage, will do this repeatedly, eventually it has always caught and started! (whew lucky)
Moved flywheel by hand a few teeth didn't solve prob. Battery has at least 12.6 volts. Terminals are clean.

I'm lost need some help, anybody got any ideas?

Does this motor have a compression release valve?
Could the timing device be sticky?
Does it start on 2 cyls?
I know just enough to thourghly confuse myself.

PLEASE help this old man!

herm

I would first start with a compression test. If that checks out good, I would check the float level, it sounds like your dumping too much gas on the plugs. If that checks good, check to see if you are getting a good strong spark, if not, then you might need to do some electronic trouble shooting.

One thing if I'm not wrong, is that your motor does not have a choke, it has a primer and if you continue to hold it in, you will be causing a flooding situation.
Pull the plugs and see if they are wet, if so, crank engine over with plugs out and try to dry it out some.

Put plugs back in and push key in for a count of 8 and release it and start.
That is how I do mine and it starts ever time.
Just my .02 worth.
