91 Evinrude tracker 25hp impeller check

Hey guys, so I posted a different thread a few days back talking about my motor and a couple guys said to check my impeller. So I got off work today an went out to my boat to check my impller because I ha nothing better to do. I took off the 4 bolts and one but off that holds my lower unit on. After I done that I started to slide it off. It came down an inch to an inch and a half. After that it stopped. I didn't force it off. I just pushed it back in and bolted it on. And comments on this?

shift rod needs to be disconnected also.

i cant help with the disconnect spot on that modern motor ( my motors are all vintage). someone will chime in with help. you should get yourself a proper service omc service manual tho....it will pay for itself 10x over. but in a pinch, google boatinfo, there is a service manual that could help there.

You have to remove the water pick up screens in the lower unit and disconnect the shift linkage there. Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your motor. Good parts break downs.

Hey guys, caught a break in the weather and went out to check the impeller. It is bent so I will need a new one. Where could I get one at? And the lower unit would only go down that far. Thanks for the input.

The lower unit must come right off.---Any more pictures to see what is going on here.-------You have to slide the one nut up to remove a tapered / black plastic keeper.-Was that done ????

No, I did not see a nut to remove the black plastic keeper. It came down and stopped right there. I don't know much about boat motors but the dropping of the lower unit was supposed to be easy so I did it myself. I was able to check the impeller which is pictured. I had 2 more pictures but it wouldn't let me upload them for some reason. I had a guy coming up for me to work on his truck so I just put it all back together so it wouldn't get anything in it. If I don't have work tomorrow I will drop it again and post more pictures and go more into what I see and maybe figure out why it won't come all the way off.

You remove the water screens.-------Now seperate the coupling nuts on the shift rod.----Slide the upper nut to the top, may require paint to be scraped off the rod..----Remove the split plastic keeper on the shift rod.---Remove the entire lower unit. ---Install the new impeller.

I done all that except the split plastics keeper. I didn't remember seeing a keeper of any sorts on it. I don't have work tomorrow so I will be able to take it apart again.

It is a wee tapered bit of plastic.----Black in colour and it is split.-----You can not miss it !
