I recently replaced the water pump on my 91 175 efi/xri. Everything was working fine until the other day when I was running at wot and the warning buzzer went off. It was a continuous beep and would shut off if I slowed down for a minute. The water pee hole was pumping out lots of water when the buzzer went off. Anyone have any Ideas?

Welcome to iboats.

Sticky thermostat(s), oversensitive senders, scale coating on the cooling surfaces preventing good heat transfer.

You can soak the scale off of thermostats that are sticking from scale with vinegar. Senders don't usually fail in this manner, but... The last possibility is far more involved. Remove the heads, lay them on their backs and soak the cooling passages with vinegar. You'll also expose the outer surface of the cylinder which you can gently scrape or brush enough to help quite a bit.

Willy, Pardon me, But
I don't agree with you're course of action, just yet...

jpen, we need more information..
First, the serial# for your motor..
Did the engine start sounding the alarm just after the water pump replacement?

The serial # is 0d051078 and I replaced water pump and ran it at wot twice before any of this started happening. Does the oil alarm sound a continuous tone or is it only for an overheat? I think the big tank was a little under half full.

First time we ran it for a couple of hours wot at various time of course. The second time maybe an hour or two of run time. Also it does not sound alarm if I run it less than wot.

Do you have a water pressure guage?

Have you checked the poppet?

I have a '94 175 XRi.

Make sure you installed all the parts correctly on the water pump, especially the water tube assembly. I thought I installed something wrong once, ended up tearing the lower unit off a few times to make sure everything was ok.

Thermostats are cheap and easy and I would change them.

My powerhead is always cool to the touch at WOT, but at idle she gets hot, but no alarms ever go off. From my observations, most of the water cooling the motor exits out of the prop area. The discharge stream is just an indicator and doesn't tell you how well the engine is cooling.

I haven't checked the poppet valve yet. Could the poppet valve become plugged if it was run in shallow water? I did run in some shallow sandy water and shortly after that is when all this started happening.

Just thought I would give an update. I just replaced the water pump again and found out that I put the lower gasket in backwards, which chocked off about 60% of the water
