I've recently re installed a 90HP Yamaha to my boat after it was painted. I ran the motor as it had been sitting for about three months. It started straight up. The only thing that has been done to it since. Is it has had a Bilge pump wired up independantly to the main loom as it is fully automatic . Hence it has nothing to do with the motor wiring at all. Also the main loom has all been cable tied to neaton things up.
Has anyone an idea of how to check my CDI? Is there a chance it could have been spiked with the wiring of the bilge pump. The local repair agent 2 1/2 hours away hasn't seen one of these things spike before. I've checked all fuses and have cleaned the plugs in case oil was the cause.

Puzzled  :(
Snapperman New Zealand

Re: 90HP yamaha- no spark

I've never had a CDI failure on a 3 cylinder, but it is possible. I would first disconnect the engine harness to isolate any problems there might be in the remote station. Using a remote start switch, spin the engine and check for spark. You can also remove the white wire (I believe its the bottom left screw) on the CDI. That's the kill circuit. If it still doesn't spark, call back and we'll try again.

snapperman,

It won't turn over or won't start? Or both?

Either way, it's time to go hunting, for fuses and breakers that is.

Your engine is probably fused under the hood, somewhere. Start looking for wires that have fuse holders in them. Also, look for little red buttons (breakers).

Playing around with the wires probably popped one. It's happened to a lot of us.

Re: 90HP yamaha- no spark

Thanks guys, I've removed the wiring harness and have cranked the motor over. I've got a great spark on number two cyclinder and nothing on the others. I've swapped the plugs around and it has made no difference. I suppose the only other thing to do is now swap the coil wires around on the CDI to see if its the CDI or the coils. Odd isn't it.

Any other ideas of wisdom

Snapperman

Re: 90HP yamaha- no spark

I've just checked the motor again and have discovered that I have no spark on one and three cyclinder. By swapping the wires of the three coils on the CDI I was able to elemenate faulty coils. Can anyone help in regards to how to check the igniters (excitors) or would I have no spark at all if they were crook. Or is there any way the CDI can be checked

Re: 90HP yamaha- no spark

If there's enough juice to fire one cylinder, then the stator is OK. Being you've swapped coils to no avail, the probable culprit is the CDI. The book shows a check for the CDI, but trust me, it's an impossible check with alot of varables. To check to be sure the trigger assembly is good, swap the wires going to the CDI, the spark should stay the same if its the CDI. If the spark moves between cylinders, then the trigger could be bad.

Re: 90HP yamaha- no spark

Thanks everyone for all your help. I rang the agent in the end because all attempts looked like a blown CDI. They informed me to clean under the fly wheel as the triggers can get dirty. Oil must have flicked up on first starting the motor. Hence it ran fine until it was shut down. All we did was spray contact cleaner up under the flywheel. Now she runs great will be booked in for a full service in a week.

Just one more thing to ask. What do I need to do to store the boat for 12 months.

Many thanks

Snapperman

N.Z. :D :p
