I'm new to this boat stuff and coould use some help. First my motor does not seem to be keeping the battery charged. I trickle charge it overnight and everythings fine. After a couple of hours of use the motor wont turn over. Does this thing have a MAG or a alternater?? How can I check it? I've never thaken the cover off the motor and know zip about it.
Also ( side note ) the boat is very hard to steer with the nose trim all down and eases considerably when trimmed up. PLease forgive my ignorance but do motors(90hp) have any sort of power assist -- if so where is it and how can i check it.

------------------
chuck

Welcome aboard, Chuck. First things first: Go get a Clymer Shop Manual that covers the year of your 90 OMC. Read the sections related to your questions above, then post us with what you don't find or don't understand.

If your battery measures above 12.6 volts with the engine at fast idle your alternator is charging. 12 volts or less it is not.

If your battery measures less than 11v with the engine off and all of your lights and electronics on, you have a bad cell in the battery.

Standing by.
JB

If motor is charging (>12 v)but battery still not holding, try using a "load" tester on the battery (talk to your friends or take in to someone). Note, battery must be "charged" before load testing. They will go bad just "sitting around". Be sure to check fluid level in cells and fill with DI (deionized or distilled) water, don't use tap water, it kills batteries.
