Can anybody tell me what the purpose of the air box is? I was going to remove it to spray de-carb in engine when I found a bolt I could not access without removing the manifold, carbs and air box all together. what would be the problem with leaving it off, if any.

Ahoy, Cedarplug! I don't think decarb is the right thing to do to a 4 stroke. Check with Honda before you do anything else.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: 90HP Honda ?

Carbon usually builds up in 2-strokes from combustion of the fuel/oil mixture. A 4 stroke should not have carbon problems requiring treatment. There may be some to remove at the time of an overhaul, but I haven't heard of decarbing a 4 stroke outboard as routine maintenance.

Find a can of sea foam/deep creep, or OMC engine tuner read label. I have used both in 4 cycle engines, but you have to be careful of what you use, when there is sensors in the exhaust. BEWARE read label before you buy, and use.

You're right. You can't remove that air box without removing the entire intake manifold.Crazy as that may sound ,that's what we got.Don't run without that silencer or you will have mixture problems.Decarb is not part of Hondas regular maintenance. Are we having problems that you feel decarb would help?

Re: 90HP Honda ?

The reason for removing the air box is to attempt to use a air flow meter I have to balance the carbs instead of buying the 4 vacuum guage set. This flow meter is held up to the throat of each carb and displays vacuum volume. Do you think this would work ok? Also it looks like to me if I left the one inaccessible bolt out I could remove the silencer without removing half the engine the next time I need to get to the carbs for any reason.

Re: 90HP Honda ?

I have not tried to use an at the bore vac tester on these engines, so I can't say they wouldn't work.I can say that in the manifold vacumme checks are generally more accurate and better suited to the type of fine tuning these engines require.
