i have a 1990 90hp i am replacing the impeller and tstat in what should i look for how is the gear shifter hooked up and how do i disconnect it

On my 75 it is just a splined shaft that slides in and out when the lower unit is removed, nothing to disconnect.

On the 1990 90hp there is a place right under the kingpin where the shift rod bends at 90 degrees and is conected with a pin. Remove cotter pin, pull pin and there you go. The king pin is the long pin that the motor swivels on left and right. Take a look and let me know if you find it.
