90HP Evinrude

I have a 1992 Evinrude 90HP. The model number is E90TLEND. The problem is that the engine will only idle if the Engine cover is on. Once you try to take off in the water it dies out. You can avoid the problem if you take the cover off. It runs fine after that but you have to leave the cover off. Any ideas what the problem is? I think it may been a blown gasket. Please Help.

That indicates that either the engine is situated on the boat in such a manner that it is breathing in, drawing in its exhaust thru the air intake OR an exhaust leak exists within the powerhead area.

So then it is very likeley that a gasket is blown where te exhaust is?

So, if the cowling is off, the engine runs perfect throughout all RPM's, but if you put it back on it does not?
