I have a 2005 2-stroke 90 Yamaha won't go in reverse. Was out Sunday and everything was fine. Stopped to net some bait and when we went to leave the motor wouldn't turn over. Suspected the shifter wasn't quite in neutral.
Checked shifter and it was in neutral but noticed it wouldn't go in reverse.
I mean the shifter will not move to reverse... stops hard like something is broken or preventing it from moving. Shifts into forward with no problems and a spin of the prop turns the flywheel so it shows it can get into forward OK. Prop spins freely in neutral as well.
Strange thing is the motor will not turn over with the key while in neutral. It seems like the neutral switch is telling the ignition it is in gear when mechanically it is not.
Looked at the linkage in the cowling for issues and everything looks fine.
Any ideas would be great before I drop the lower unit.
Thanks
