90 Tohatsu problem

Have a 2004 90 Tohatsu LPDI that started to give me some trouble. I am waiting now to get it in to the shop but thought I would post here to see if anyone knows what the problem is.

Starts and runs great but occasionally while running at speed under load all 3 tach lights will blink on at the same time then off with no alarm noise and then immediately the rpm's fall. The engine does not stall but will not act normally until you drop back into neutral. Once the engine is brought back in to neutral you can accelerate again and it will be normal for 300yards or so then the problem repeats. It will do this a few times then run completely normally for the next 15 miles.

Any ideas or what the 3 lights blinking on and off means?

Do the rpms fall into a forced idle mode or just drop to 3000 rpm?

Two possible problems:

1) TPS needs to be re-set at a dealership.

2) Engine has low voltage..Usually caused by a worn out battery that no longer has the amps to operate the DFI system. Almost always the issue on batteries that were too small to begin with and are over two years old.

Elvin,

The battery is pretty new, January and it is 115 amp hours and 1000 cranking amps? Is that big enough? Would a loose or corroded cable cause the problem as well?

Re: 90 Tohatsu problem

Probably not the battery then.....Which brings you voltage loss somewhere due to wiring or that TPS.

Re: 90 Tohatsu problem

The voltage according to the GPS is 12 volts while resting and 14volts when the engine is running. I cleaned the battery terminals and cables........they were pretty loose. If that doesn't do it and it still gives me problems tomorrow I will wait for the tps reset. Thanks for the help.
