I am considering buying a new 90 tldi for my 18ft cc from westbrook marine. Does anyone have any advice about the engine...problems? Has service been an issue because of the lack of dealers? Thanks for the help....

Service? You won't need any service on that motor. And if you do, just take it back to Westbrook Marine because Ken will treat you right. I bought a '03 90TLDI for a 20' skiff I built, so I'm going into my fourth season with it. http://groups.msn.com/bricog/tolmanskiff.msnw?Page=1
Well over 100 hrs on it, and I haven't had a bit of trouble. It starts on the second revolution every time, doesn't smoke a bit, sips the oil, and gets the best fuel economy of any 90hp motor made, 2 stroke or 4. If that doesn't convince you, then consider this: the Tohatsu will cost over $2k less than an e-tec 90.

Re: 90 tldi

I bought my outboard from Ken, thank goodness I have not had to have any service done it would hurt me too much to go back in there.

I walked in, wrote a check, walked out with engine in under 15 minutes, I was the ideal customer.

I come back a month later to buy a gallon of oil, the price had doubled and I got a major attitude when I asked about idle speed of my tohatsu.

I drove all the way to Kittery to avoid giving ken the sale of a venture trailer, he has an attitude problem and I will be honest, I expect to be treated right if I am a good customer, it hasnt happened yet and it never will.

I spent nearly $4,000 on my engine no questions asked, I didnt expect an attitude when I came back for some oil and had a simple question about what speed the engine should idle at.

Just my thoughts, this has happened before and I should have known not to even bother again.

I would shop elsewhere if it were me, I love the tohatsu engine though, 105 hours on mine with no problems at all.

I am on my 3rd season with my TLDI. No issues. Great fuel economy, great performance, great running, great price. What else could you possibly want?

I couldn't tell you about dealer service....I have never needed a dealer for service. Several hundred hours later...nothing but good reports...
Research using the "search" button. I don't think there has EVER been a thread here reporting a problem with a TLDI.

Nissan/ Tohatsu has a reputation for extraordinary reliability for a reason....

Re: 90 tldi

Bought mine last summer, no problems with it, dealer been fine, have only troubled him for the 10 hours leg change. Oil is expensive tho, but no more than equvilent Mercury, Evinrude,.. etc oil.
I wouldn't say it's the best Di on the market, cos it isn't if money is no object. It's sort beaten into 2nd place by one make or another on different criteria, but as it was mentioned before, at something like 2k cheaper, it's upto you to decide if it's worth 'putting' up with. For me, the answer was yes.
