I have a '90 4.3L OMC engine with a Cobra I/O.

Recently the starboard manifold/riser clogged causing the manifold to get screaming hot and the exhaust hoses to burn. I removed the manifold, cleared the clogs, re-installed the manifold, and replaced the exhaust hoses. I noticed that there was no exhaust flapper seal in the exhaust pipe. The rod was there, but no seal. I bought and installed one. The assumption was that either one was never installed when the engine was installed new or that it had corroded and disintegrated. Water flow through the manifold is now fine and it runs cooler than the port side.

Since then though, I've noticed a strange noise at all speeds from idle to full throttle. I thought it was an engine knock of some time, but have determined it to be coming from the carburetor. It's a hollow "wock" kind of sound. It's not consistent but happens a few times, stops, then happens again, etc. There is no apparent indication of a miss or lack of performance or overheating. The engine idles, shifts and runs OK. I don't want to ignore the noise since I've never heard it in the nine years I've owned the boat. Could this be a breathing problem? A valve problem? A fuel problem? Could it have anything to do with the manifold I re-installed?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: '90 OMC 4.3L - Strange Noise

Just a suggestion, I've worked on many auto engines, and "wock" through the carb, as I am hearing it sound like a few things.

1. It could be timing, but if the motor is running really well, then not likely.

2. Sometimes an intake valve will stick open, and when the plug fires, the explosion will come partly back up the intake. This could be caused by very dirty intake valves. As a quick cost efficient possible remedy that surely couldn't hurt, get some sea Foam, power tune, etc. Load the engine up with that at about 1500 rpm, till it dies. Then let it sit. Start again, and load up again. It will smoke like hell, but that stuff will really clean an intake system. Good luck, and tell us how it goes.

There is no question in my mind that you have a big ball of melted nylon bouncing around in your exhaust. That is all thats left of your flapper.

I'm with hondon on this one. The rod was what was left of the old flapper. It got hot enough to melt the hinge, and what's left is probably bopping around in your exhaust. Pull the hose and dig around for the offending blob.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try flusing the engine and "fishing" for the melted flapper in the exhaust pipe.

This site is great!!!
