Contact the seller and tell him of the problem first. Then what is the serail number, start by removing the + wire at the solinoid then hook a voltmeter or bulb between
the battery and cable so you don't hurt the wiring with the short and start tracing differant circurts till you find the problem

Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight. Put a pliers to the wingnuts. I'm suprised an inline-6 would put out enough amps to do that.

Re: 90 mercury( 6 cyl) hot terminals?

Are you sure you had the correct polarity on the cables? If you swapped the neg and pos cables you'd get a lot of current flow before the rectifier burnt up!

You may find it easier to disconnect the (+) wire on the starter then see if you still get the short circuit. The solenoid contacts may have fused shut due to a defective starter.

HTH & let us know what you find..........ed

Re: 90 mercury( 6 cyl) hot termanals?

well last night I did a little messing around with it. I bought a new fuel line (from gas tank to motor). And I followed the + cable all the way so I knew I had the right one. Anyway I got it started and it ran well but then when I went to drop into gear it stalls. When I first start it it has to be almost full throttle (in the warm up throttle). Is this just a carb problem or is it an eletrical problem? Thanks for everyones input also..................8)
