'90 Mariner 90HP water intake

Hello all,
This is only my second post here, but I have gained a wealth of information over time here. I ave a 90 HP mariner.. I think it's a 1990 model. There are several small peices of rubber floating around in the lower unit water intake. The rubber is about 1/8 inch thick. I noticed this because no water was coming out of the engine when running. I think these peices of rubber are bolocking the water line. An ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have been looking at it today. I had the impeller replaced last year. At any rate, is this a complex job? I am mechanocally inclined, and am confident doing most anything under the hood of a car. Thanks in advance.
SG

No.. Its not really hard at all. But their are a few things to know. A manual would be a good thing to have.

This is just a guess..Have you run it on the trailor just for a few seconds or min? That will distroy a impeller quick!! If you run one you must have it hooked up to the waterhose and dont run it above 1500 rpm.

I have never run it without the flush boot on (and even then, never above idle) , however, I wouldn't put it past my brother, who has had the boat for the last 8 months or so. Interesting to know that's all it takes! I'll buy a manual and go at it this afternoon. Thanks for your help, Trent :D .

I'll second Trents message to not run without water, don't even turn it over..

I didn't know you couldnt' rev an engine on water muffs though, ,why is that bad?

(what I usually do is wrap tape tight around the muffs so that it seals much harder and turn the water pressure up a bit..)

is that bad?

rgds

Frank

PS, if you are going to try to run it,, keep checking the head temp, if you can touch it for more then 5 seconds without buring, its not to hot.

pulling the leg is easy, I have never had a manual and I have always managed..

if you have a mechanical gearbox, check for the linkage, it will have to run down to the foot and you'll need to disconnect it.

if its electrical, you can just disconnect the two wires running down there.
Take your time and pay careful attention to everythign you take appart or disconect, and mark any adjustable linkages and whatnot you disconnect so that you can put them back in exactly the same place later.

rgds

Frank

sgroer:

Two more things.

First, Make sure that BOTH the control box AND the motor are in gear before you attempt to put the lower unit back on.

Second, Spend the extra few dollars and get a "neapreme" (Not sure about the spelling) water pump impeller. They last so much longer. ;)

Craig :)
