After reading many posts here regarding what the proper prop selection would be for 'X'? I wanted to share my results of a recent prop change. If you have a similar application this may provide you some background.

My application is a 16' Glastron powered by a 90 Johnson SPL.

Old prop 14X17 Michigan Wheel:

Top speed = 34 mph (GPS)
RPM = 4600

New prop 13 1/4 x 17 Solas:

Top speed = 42 mph (GPS)
RPM = 5300/5400

Both prop results were with the same or similar gear and passengers on board.

Just spent a wonderful week in Cloyne, ON on a beautiful lake with the family. Week was fantastic, but I fried my tach... but thats another post.:rolleyes:

Hope this is helpful.

Great job getting back with info. Did you change props due to wear or damage?
What critera did you use for your selection?While changing brands can result in widely variable results An 8 mph improvement is really exceptional.Especially when you consider a 17" prop is pretty typical in boat size and hp.

Re: 90 Johnson SPL - Prop Change Results

Steel -

The 14x17 is a brand new prop that replaced a nicked up prop of the same size make when I purchased the boat. I was not pleased with the peformance of the MW prop so I decided to replace it with a Solas. I chose the Solas based on favorable feedback from members here and the cost was as well a factor. I found a post from some time ago where a member had a similar application and his feedback indicated even better numbers than mine - so I was sold.

My recent trip to Canada was the first outting with the Solas prop and the smaller inland lakes in Canada provide optimum testing conditions. I was floored with the result and couldnt beleive it. My wife handed me the GPS and it was reading 41/42 MPH. Plus I reached the desired RPM range for my outboard.

Isn't it great when things fall together.Its true the Solas props seem to be very predictable.
