Motor runs good most of the time but does'nt have the power that a 200 horse motor on a 17' bassboat should have. Only runs about 63 mph. The tach quit working but at wot, does'nt sound like more than 5000-5500 rpm. Also, occasionaly, when you take off, it does'nt want to get on plane, meaning no power at all, then all of a sudden it will pick up and take off. Ran it out of gas yesterday: 6 gallons in about 20 minutes. It has the vro pump with oil lines disconnected. Also prop is 13 1/2x25'" pitch. Anyone have any ideas???

------------------

First find out why the tach quit. There are several reasons why it would quit but if it's because the water cooled regulator shorted out, there's a chance the wiring could catch fire. It's not that uncommon with water cooled regulators. If it is shorted, you may want to think about venting the block to avoid a repeat.

Let us know and good luck!

First, can you check the tach with a ohmmeter at the back of tach to see if the tach is bad, and how would you check to see if the regulater fried. Second, what do you mean by venting the block, and how would it help to keep the regulater cool? Thanks for any help as this is my 1st boat and I've only had it a couple months.

I have the identical problem! except I have a 175. I thought that my prop was to big? The tach will read occasionally at idle and sometimes up to 3000 but then drops to zero. I would like to know more of these regulators. Where? My water pressure gauge line is blocked, does this tee of to it?

Will this affect fuel mileage? Mine is a HOG no doubt. I have 27 gallon tank, went about 10 miles on half tank at 3/4 to wot

Does yours just all of a sudden ever seem like you took your foot off the throttle, or do you have the same tach problem? I don'tlike the idea of wire possibaly catching fire!

Just like your original message. Once up on plane everything seems fine, Thought 175 would get up and run. Thought mine was fuel problem.

Re: 90 Johnson 200 fuel problems, I think!

I have a Johnson 200 1988 with the same power loss problem and an intermittent tach problem. Not sure if these two are realated though. I have had the tach problem for the last four years and the motor problem has just occured in the last two. The tach is most likely the regulator. The loss of power started happening last season. On plane at 4500 then a drop to 3500-4. Then hard to get back on plane ane then a surge in power back to 4500. This season have the same problem, but now when the power loss occured it has stayed and I smell gas on that motor. I have it narrowed down to a dirty carb or sticking float, stator or timer base. Will let you know what I find. Please let me know if you find also.

Thanks,
Rich. richard.csonger@bcbsma.com

------------------

Well, I figured out my problem! Was'nt tach related though. Took all 6 carbs off and cleaned them, they were really plugged up. Changed filter, set timing (10 deg. off). Took it out and got all kinds of power now! Gets up to 76 mph, lots of throttle response, and shoots out of the hole. Now if I could just figure out my tach.....

On my 88 xr4, the tach quit and ended up being the rectefier. A cheap item, but the first time I waited to long and damaged the stator. Second time I was right on it. Make sure your system is charging.
Dennis

I also found my problem. Took off the carbs cover and found a gas leak on the #1 carb. One of the three way plastic tee's rotted out. It is running rich and rough, just hope a good tune up will fix. One of the easiest fixes I have ever done though.
