Hi all,

I need to know if the crank & rods will interchange between these two motors:

1990 Johnson 140
J140CXESR

1994 Evinrude 120
E120TLERC

According to what I can find on the BRP site, there are differences in part numbers based on the "suffix", but everywhere else I read says the suffix doesn't matter?

The "K" suffix 1994 120 shows to have the same rods as the 1990 140, but the (C, E, M & R) suffix models show a different rod...does anyone know what the differences are in the rods?

Any help on the interchangeability of the parts on these two engines would be greatly appreciated...Thanks...

The differences in the rods are the 1987-93 used a H beam rod or heavy rod as some call it and the 1994 and up use a tapered rod or lite rod as some people say. The "heavy" is the 1st pic and the "lite" is the second. The rods will work in either engine but you cannot miss match, either all heavy or all lite. The difference in crank is the 1991 and earlier engines, bottom snout is longer. If you use a 91 and earlier crank you will need to change driveshaft or use a pre 91 lower. If you use the 1992 and newer crank both units will work but you loose some spline depth if you use the 91 and earlier lower unit. Here measurements for units and cranks.
1979-91 V4/V6 crossflow and loopers: 21 3/4
1992-up V4/V6 crossflow and loopers: 22 1/8
1991- up 60 degree V6...................: 21 5/16
1985-1994 V8...............................: 21 3/4
All measurements from top of driveshaft to underside of water pump wear plate. All rounded to nearest 1/16. All measurements for 20" shaft models. Add 5 inches for 25" models Old style cranks are longer so driveshaft will be shorter. It depends on year of gearcase also. I use the attached chart when swapping cranks to get correct d.s. length. Also here are crank measurements for V6 loopers:
Old (91 & back) from bearing seat to end of crank=2.397
New ( 91 &up) from bearing seat to end of crank= 2.121
Old (91 & back) from bearing to d.s. end=1.425
New (91 & up) from bearing to d.s end= 1.228
Measurement may be off couple of thousands due to machining but close

Re: 90' Johnson 140 V4 vs. 94' Evinrude 120 V4

Thanks Faztbullet...very valuable information!

Are there any Evinrude/Johnson engines that will swap parts directly with the 1994 120 V4 (E120TLERC)? I am primarily concerned with the main components...block, heads, crank, rods, pistons, etc...

Also, is there a parts application resource out there where you can look up a part number and it will tell you what models/engines it was used in or will fit?

Thanks...

The blocks, cranks and rods are the same between the 120 and 140. The light rods are fine thru about 9000, especially in a drag type motor (hard on, easy off the throttle). At about 9300 or so in a circle race engine (hard on, hard off, hard on the throttle) they tend to come apart. Using the 93 & newer 200/225 type pistons with the light rods makes a huge improvement in the idle quality. If you use the 93 200/225 pistons you can also put finger ports in the V4.

As for your information here are direct swap part engines:
1992-1994 120hp
1992-1997 125hp
1995-1997 130hp
1992-1994 140hp
