90 inline merc problem

Hi, I have aquired a 1980 90 hp inline 6 merc,can't get it to run in gear at high speed. starts good ,idles great, but when it starts to plane out it surges. I've been thru the fuel system but a mechanic told me it may be the high speed part of the stator. My book doesn't cover anything except checking the stator with an ohmeter(checked good)Anyway to check further,maybe voltage while running? Thanks,Timb

Could be a number of parts need attention. Look first at the fuel pump replace the diaphram with kit. Change fuel pump bulb and lines. Does the fuel leak anywhere when pumping? I am guessing you have change the plugs cleaned out the carb jets. Then if this does not work look for an electrical problem and start replacing stator and powerpacks.
