I'm looking to upgrade the outboard on my boat to a 90hp. I found a 1996 evinrude 2 stroke that will need one of the cylinders "bored". I assume that the cylinder has a score in it.

Is this motor worth the investment and effort for a novice DIYer or will it cost me $$$ to get it up and running?

Thanks for all imput

The word "assuming" can be costly. Until you "know" the condition of the engine its impossible to tell if it's a bargain or not. If you buy it "not knowing" you best buy it dirt cheap. I would as a minimum demand a compression check. If compression was low on other cylinders, removal of the heads would be mandatory so you could see whether the engine is just carboned up, worn out, or whether other cylinders are scored. If you do buy this engine, make darn sure you know what caused the damage. Carb rebuilds are mandatory as that is often the cause of the problem and it will happen again unless corrected. Properly rebuilt, that engine will serve you well.
