I have a 90 HP Mercury, it is a 1978 model that has been used very little and is in pretty good shape. My problem is when in the water the motor cuts out and sometimes will die at about 1800 rpm. On land with water connected to the lower drive, there is no cut out at any rpm. Also, when idling in the water and I open it wide open, it takes off fine and doesn't stall at the 1800 rpm, only does it when I just speed up a little at a time. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem with my '84 90hp and I have narrowed it down to the stator or trigger coils.

Try running it on the muffs and pulling one spark plug wire at a time. If it stumbles on every other plug (either 1,3,5 or 2,4,6) it is more than likely the stator or trigger assyembly.
