As I have stated before I am saving for a new 90hp to put on an 1860. I have almost saved all the money, and will be makeing the purchase soon. I am leaning toward the Johnson because of its larger displacement, and the fact that it is a v4. I troll a little, and think that it will troll better than the inline 3 cylinder yamaha will. The problem is, many people seem to be Die Hard Yamaha fans on this site. I am not a fan of any outboards yet! Can anyone honestly tell me a reason why I should stay away from the Johnson? Many people have told me that Johnson is makeing an excellent outboard now that bombardier owns them. So how many people have bought an 02 or newer johnson 90, and how do you like it? From what I can tell the johnson seems to be more motor than the yamaha, and for less money. I dont want to buy a motor just becuase it is what everyone else has, I want the most for my money!! So can anyone tell me HONESTLY why I should buy the yamaha over the johnson? Thanks for any and all help, as this is a large purchase for me!

Please don't post the same question in two places - it gets confusing.

Come on guys, how about some help. I see plenty of you have the johnson 90, how does it perform, would you rather have a yammahamer?

Re: 90 hp JOHNSON

Bill,
In July I traded 1992 Mercury 115 with a broken crank shaft (and some cash) for my current 2000 90hp Johnson V4. The boat is a 1992 17ft fiberglass Astro Fish/ski (17FSX). I don't know how much the boat weighs but the maximum weight capacity is 1250lbs if that helps. The Merc 115 would push it 51mph with a new SS prop. The 90hp pushes it 39-40mph with a slightly worn aluminum prop. I plan on taking Dhadley 's advice to try to gain better top speed. As far as reliabilty, I am very pleased so far with the Johnson. With good plugs/gas/oil/battery it fires right up and runs smooth and strong though it is kinda loud at WOT in my opinion. Slow it down from WOT to about 80% throttle and its very quiet. Much quieter than the Mercury at that speed.
As far as my preference compared to Yamaha....I know a guy who has a Yamaha 150 on a 18.5ft Cajun and he is very happy with it (60+mph)though I have no first hand knowledge of Yamaha outboards' performance or reliability. Being Japanese they may be more expensive to repair but I don't know for sure. I've only had this motor for a couple of months but so far, I've been pleased with it and would recommend it. Good luck!
Clint

Triton,

The V-4 90 hp. is a tried and true design. With good maintenance it will run strong for years.

Yor thinking is correct. The larger displacement (105 cid) will have a greater punch on the lower end than most 3-cyl's with far less displacement. Top end speeds may be similar.

Parts and service are available just about everywhere and there is nothing "mysterious" about that engine.

Enjoy!
