90 hp Johnson wont Idle without choke on

A friend picked up a 90 hp Johnson, THE MODEL # IS VAML-11C SERIAL IS #C437634 It won't start or keep running down low without the choke full on. It runs ok as long as the choke is full on, soon as you take the choke off even just a little it stalls. Also can anyone tell me what year this motor is. Thanks

V4M11 is a 1965 90 hp Johnson engine.By your description of the running issue I'm guessing that your carburetors are fouled with restrctive deposits that are causing you to have to choke down the air volume to keep the engine running.Best to remove them and completly dismantle and install new kits.For this you will need to get yourself a service manual ,perferably a factory one that is specific to your engine.Good luck.
