hello everyone I just purchased my first boat from a friend and after hookin all the cables up to the motor I cranked her up a she ran perfect even though it sat for a year without being cranked last August to be exact. When I cranked the motor up there was quite a bit of white smoke coming from the propellor and around the lower part of the motor and I was just wondering if that was normal? Or if it isn't what should I do to fix it. Btw I had it hooked up to muffs from a water hose so I'm not sure if it was just steam from the water or just from sitting up. Thanks for any advice!!

If it keeps doing it after another start up it could mean water in the cylinders/exhaust but it was probably just condensation or the like burning off.
Checks it pumping water and that the overheat horn works and the lower unit has oil and then you are good to go...

Re: 90 hp Johnson smoke?

If the engine was properly winterized or put up for long-term storage-it may have fogging oil in the cyls. Once it is first started in the spring, it is likely that internal fogging oil will cause temporary smoke, and that it will burn off in 10-15 minutes. After that, it's not unusual for the engine to smoke somewhat till it fully warms up. A cold-running (choked) engine does not have good combustion till the engine warms up to normal operating temps. The engine's telltale indicates the water pump impeller is functioning, not that it still won't overheat when running in the lake. You'll want to be sure the engine at idle-will run normal temps, between 143 and 155 degrees, once the engine is fully warmed up. Check the cyl head temps with a laser temp gun. I'd ask the prior owner how long ago the water pump impeller was changed. You may just want to replace it so you are sure you won't get stranded on the lake this season.
