I have a meteor and i am wondering if you can start it just by touching the leads to a battery NO switch or anything. ??

Also what wires are for the electronic shift?

When i got the boat there was a 1'x1' aluminum box under the rear end inside the boat. with all rusted wires and broken I dont know whats attatched to it. any one have that kind of setup?

I guess im just trying to find out wether or not i can start it without allthe wires being connected.

the box was all the wiring connections to the remote control. what is the model # of the motor, need to determine exactly what you have.

Well, you can by hot-wiring the ignition. Be sure you go through the resistance wire going to the coil.

But that "box" contains the voltage regulator, alternator diodes, starting solenoid, alternator fuse, etc. The stuff in that box is worth almost as much as the whole rest of the motor.

The motor looks great! And the harness wireing is in great shape.

I bought the boat/motor/trailer off some guy for $75

The pic looks like the box was dunked in salt water dos'nt it?
Heres the kicker it was fastend under the engine splash well i dont know how it got so corroded. Possbly from the moisture not haveing a real good way to get out?

As bad as it is, it looks pretty good to me. You're right, the locataion makes it vulnerable to submersion from water in the boat...even a rainstorm can swamp it. Salt water can cause a complete meltdown.

The starter solenoid is available everywhere, make sure you get the right kind and not a look-alike car solenoid.

The diodes may be OK, test them.

The voltage regulator is obvioulsy junk. I have a note in my stash that says: 1962 Chevy truck Delco-Remy voltage regulator is same as a 1964 Evinrude Unicharger. According to mrfixitman40 on iboats forum. 9/14/07. (And 1964 Johnson)

The 60 amp ceramic alternator fuse is visible in the lower left corner in the picture. I can't decide if it is blown or not. The little flat wire across the ceramics is the fuse element.

you really need to order the service and parts manuals. there is a complete wiring diagram there, as well as the rest of what you are going to have to do. impeller, carbs. point, condenser, coils. timing.

What Tashasdaddy said, you need a manual. I can give you a complete outboard motor repair course, including basic electrical circuits, but it would take a long time and a lot of typing. Even the factory repair manuals assume you know something about what you are doing. After all they are written primarily for the dealer's mechanics. Hm.m.m.m., maybe I will start a school (?)
