In response to the budget crisis, Gov Corzine's proposed budget would severely cut NJDEP funding. In turn, NJDEP (the agency that operates the NJ State Parks) has stated that "In order to achieve the targeted cuts, staffing must be reduced, necessitating the closure of areas and elimination of services" at some state parks.
One of the proposed closures is Round Valley State Park which many of us use for boating and fishing
The exact impacts are not yet clear (click here to see the proposed cuts by the NJDEP). This proposal leaves the question of whether or not the reservoir would remain open to boating and fishing. However, I urge you to respond now and let our government know that ANY elimination of services is unacceptable! We cannot allow Corzine and the NJDEP to take this first step in the closure of parks services. This sets precedence for further cuts in years to come.
Please take action and contact the following people to let them know how you feel:
NJ Gov. John Corzine
NJDEP Commissioner Lisa P. Jackson
Your State Representatives
Also, the IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) has set up a site where we can contact our legislators. (Mods: When/if I find a boating related organization I will replace this link)
Here is some press on the issue:
