Just purchased a used 2001 mercury 9.9hp outboard motor that has not been run for two years. Started right up and water pump seems to work however the stream of water comes and goes. Sometimes it is strong and sometimes it comes to a dribble. I think the impeller may be bad but not sure. Can anyone tell me how to check it and how to take the unit apart to see if the impeller is good.

I'm no expert, but that sounds like the thermostat doing what it is supposed to do, which is to regulate the engine temperature by passing more or less water. I have a 2005 Merc 9.9 2 stroke that I bought new, and it has always run as you describe.

Just to be safe you might change the impeller anyway.

Re: 9.9mercury outboard water pump?

I just tried to start my Merc 9.9 after being in storage for two plus years. All I get is a little spritz of water and a lot of steam. Didn't run it long, was afraid I'd do damage. Do you think the water pump impeller dried out?
