Here's question for you sailboaters: Last year I bought a 9.9hp two stroke Suzuki Hi-thrust motor. The prop is a 10X6. The information I found on the internet claims the motor is used for sailboats and for increased reverse thrust. Can anyone tell me what the motor is/was used for on sailboats? I bought the motor for use on my 13ft. boat and changed the prop to a 91/4X9 and also changed the propellor houseing, as recommended by the local dealer. Thanks in advance for your responses. DuPont (I might add that the prop blades were huge. Somewhat like Mickey Mouse ears.)

The hi thrust outboard would have been used to manuever a sailboat around when the sails are not being used.

It's much easier to manuever with an engine than it is with sails.

The hi thrust gearcase and propeller would not lend themselves well to a smaller boat that may plane. Changing them was a good call on your part.

9.9hp on a 13 foot boat? WAY too much hp for such a small boat to manuever. I have a 32' with only a 7.5 hp yamaha, and it's plenty enough to get going through a harbour or marina. It's unlikely that you'll need much of your throttle on a motor that size to take this boat to it's max hull speed. What kind of boat is it? If it doesn't have a planing hull it could be quite dangerous to take an engine like that to full throttle on your boat.

hi CSI, I may be wrong but I think dupont stuck it on a 13 ft row boat. and was asking for info on changing it.... he changed the prop and gearing so only the extended shaft could be a problem.....as you said, 9.9 would be good on a 3o foot sailboat..... :D :D
