Have a 2001 tiller model 4stroke 9.9 that when started runs fine. After several seconds (30) it starts to run rough, and will not let you advance the throttle. When you do so it just sputters and pops out the carb.I cleaned out tye carb ,(it was not dirty),changed the carb with a new one,no help.I checked the coils with metter and have the same omh readings as a new out of the box coil.I contacted tech support and explained what I had done and was told that the only thing lefy was the CDI box,and that was preventing the motor from advancing the RPMs.Quess what, they were wrong. There is no differance.
Compression is good in both cylinters, tested fuel pump and have 6,5 pounds pressure.I am at a loss.Any help from the wisemen would be appreicated.
Thank you people for your time and efforts on these boards.........

Re: 9.9 Yamaha

Patrick,
I'm encountering a similar problem, 1st with an 89 9.9 ELF and now with a 2004 9.9. I run my motor in an inboard well with a blower. Both motors have cut out or reverted to the CDI safety that won't allow acceleration. I ended up with some internal noise in the old one so I bought a new one. I had about 6 hours on the new one when it cut out a couple of times then went into the safety mode,I idled to a dock about a 1/4 mile. The oil light quit somewhere in there. This occurred when I was running the motor at about 2/3 throttles in a flat sea and the blower working fine. The Yamaha mechanic is ordering a new Oil Sender. The problem, in my case, may be the motor overheating in the well. I'm considering running the blower hose into the engine cover, or in and out. I've read about a couple of guys doing something like this on other forums. My mechanic (Yamaha Dealer)is not impressed with the Dealer Rep. Not much on figuring out the issue, more about throwing parts at the problem.
