Have a 1995 9.9 evinrude. It will not idle.I have chanced the tank, fuel line, fuel pump but it still stalls at low RPM.
I have cleaned the carb, changed the plugs and have no idea where to go next.
It runs good at mid to high RPM,s but when you return the throttle to the idle position it die's.It's not a case of the idle being to low,as when you turn the idle adjustment screw up it will race, but as you turn it down it dies.
Any idea's
Patrick

Re: 9.9 will not idle

I'm not sure what you determine is too slow an idle. It's a relative thing. If the carb is clean, float properly adjusted, low speed idle circuit clean, no leaking gaskets, low speed idle mixture adjusted properly, it should run just fine at low RPM's. Did you remove carb, dismantle same, soak parts, blow passages clear with compressed air, install carb kit, adjust low speed mixture screw??

Patrick....tell us about the number of turns the low speed needle is out. Too far out and it will die, too far in and it will die. Also, look at the reference mark on the cam.....when it meets in the middle of the cam follower roller, the throttle plate should just start to open.

I have cleaned the carb.I did not get a kit,as it was not in bad condition.I cleaned all passages.
The motor runs goods at a slightly elevated RPM.Say around 1200-1500 RPM.When I attempt to idle it down to 800 to 1000 RPM it just dies.

If it will run at idle with the chke on, you have a plugged idle circut. You need to completely take the carb apart and remove the crud from the idle circut. Remember, using compressed air, blow all passages.

Spark or gas issue, it one or the other.

Patrick,
Were you able to find what the low speed idle needle is set at (turns out from lightly seated)? Also, the link and sync as OBJ mentions...

Re: 9.9 will not idle

See if this helps....
Handy info ...(Thanks AGAIN Joe)

Depending on which carb you have, pick one of the following.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8
turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to
respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to
where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back
(sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4
turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move
them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you
would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.
--------------------------------------------------
(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow
speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no
NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low
speed needle valve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to
full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns,
start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the
engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that
point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the
smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral.
Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few
seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase.
Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit
the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point,
back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed
setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move
them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you
would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

--------------------
Joe (30+ Years With OMC)

-------------------------------------------

Have you checked the sync and link??

Re: 9.9 will not idle

I think the needle needs to be out at least 2 1/2 turns to start on these carbs.

Re: 9.9 will not idle

I have a '90 4 Deluxe and (until recently) a '90 9.9. The manual for the 4 calls for an initial low speed setting of 1 turn open. Curiously, the 9.9 manual doesn't provide an initial setting (says it's factory adjusted and that it should only be reset if disturbed -- says that after describing full carburetor disassembly and reassembly(!)) Anyway, I think I would begin with one turn open and see if the motor starts and runs, and open it by 1/8 increments until it starts and runs, then follow normal adjustment procedure described in the earlier response.

If the motor cannot be dialed in to a proper idle speed, my guess would be that the low speed oriface is obstructed. Before taking the carburetor off the motor, you might try removing the needle and carefully inserting a toothpick into the opening and twisting it a little (carefully, so as not to break off any of the toothpick -- which would then have to be removed). It doesn't take much of an obstruction to botch up the idle.

Re: 9.9 will not idle

Thanks guys,
I found a few things that you pointed out.I rebuilt the carb and while checking the link and sync I found that the cam follow roller had lost the outside nylon piece of the roller. That was effecting the results. After cleaning and rebuilding the carb I used the procedure that Xcusme provided. It works like a charm, and the motor idles like a Singer sewing machine.
Thanks for the help.

Re: 9.9 will not idle

Patrick....if it had a nylon piece in the follower roller, I really don't think it's a 95'. Could you provide the model number? We can see from that what the year is.....what I'm getting at is, it's either not a 95' or someone stuck an old style roller on it. In either event, glad ya' got it going right.....success stories are always welcome.... :)
