Aloha

I have a problem with my 2005 9.9 tohatsu. I overhauled the carb. and it started great. I checked everything 2X and no problems. I loaded it in my truck and installed it on my boat. When I tried to start it (elec) all that happened is it "clunked" as in the flywheel didnt turn. I tried to pull start and it wouldnt pull start either. It felt like I was in gear and couldnt pull the cord. No matter what I did I couldnt pull start it. I was afraid of snapping the pull cord. I checked everything...gears are working fine neutral and everything is fine. It feels as though it is frozen in place. I am at a loss. I did notice that I layed the motor on the wrong side while transporting.

Again, everything worked fine until I transported it to my boat? So, could I have damaged the engine will transporting some how? Any help would be appreciated. I live in Hilo Hawaii and its hard to fine someone to fix the engine.

Take the spark plugs out and pull the rope, see if any oil comes out. Laying it on the wrong side may have resulted in oil filling the cylinders. Pump the oil out, check the oil level and it will probably be ok. Hydrolock can bend the connecting rod and break the piston, but at starter speeds you are likely ok. It might be more likely the flywheel key would shear from the sudden stop, but you will find that out when you try to start it. ;) it could also be the pull start lock that prevents starting while it is in gear, but since you laid it on the wrong side, oil is my more likely guess.

My post assumes it's a 4-stroke.

Did you laid engine with gear shifter against it's side ? If so, remove engine cowl and check if upper locking mechanism moves freely when playing F-N-R with shifter. If it's locked will not be able to turn engine electriclly or manually in order to start it.

Happy Boating

Aloha PO

I do have a lot of oil on the spark plugs and it looks as though there is oil on a lot of engine parts. I emptied the oil and let it drain. I noticed that as soon as I emptied the oil, I was able to pull the cord. I havent tried to start the engine yet, but I am going to assume that it will be hard to start until all the oil is decipated and the plugs are cleaned. I will try later when all the oil is drained (when you said pump out, Im assuming I could just empty it) Will it be hard to pull start or do I need to brake down the engine and clean it???? Not being Irish....my luck is pretty slim....

Mahalo for your infomation..seems like it will work. I will keep you posted.

Aloha again

I tried to start and not go... When I pulled the plugs I noticed that there is still oil on the plugs. Do I have to pull the cylinder head to clean out the Oil? (OMG) is there a way that I could somehow "suck out" or vacuum the oil with a tube and syringe? I am not too good with machenical stuffs...I do follow instructions well. I do have a tohatsu manuel. Any suggestions?

Oil in the cylinders isn't that big a deal as long as nothing got broken when you tried to start it. Draining the oil from the oil drain won't help in this case. If the motor is still off the boat and the oil is still drained out of the crank case (oil drain), then just remove the plugs, set the engine down with the plug holes facing down and pull the rope a few times. That will pump the oil out. If you already refilled the engine with oil then just take the plugs out and pull the rope a few times. Most of the oil should come out, you might have to clean up the mess. Now make sure the oil level in the engine is good, clean off and install the spark plugs and pull the rope gently. Does it pull OK? If yes then gas it up and try to start it. It's going to smoke like the devil until the oil burns off (a few minutes), but it should clear up and all will be fine. You might want to give the plugs a quick cleaning after the smoking stops.

Probably what happened is laying the engine on the wrong side allowed oil to flow out of the crank case vent into the carburetor, and from there it went right into the cylinders.

Yep. Drain the carb of any oil (and flush it out by priming with the drain open. Then close the carb drain. Remove the plugs and cycle the starter a few times to expel any oil in the cylinders. Wsh the oil off the plugs with spray carb cleaner and allow to dry. Then reinstall plugs, check oil level, and start the motor. It will be a bit hard to start as there will still be some oil in the combustion chambers. It will really smoke for a few minutes, and then you should be OK.
