I have a 1987 9.9hp Nissan. Nissan made this same engine in 12,15 and 18hp. same bore, stroke, etc. My question is can I make my 9.9 into an 18hp? Is the only differance the carb.? I don't think it could be anything to do with the ignition....any ideas??

Re: 9.9 TO 18 HP

Elvin is the expert, but the 18hp two stroke has a different bore. It is 60mm vs 55mm of the 9.9 and 15hps. Same 52mm stroke on all three. Back when I purchased my 18E, I thought the mod to take a 9.9 to 15 had to do with a timing advance cam. Might have been a carb part, as well, since this was a conversation back in 1997.

Thanks, I don't mean to be a pest but is this simply a matter of switching out the cam or would the carb need to be rejetted?
Also where is the cam located?
Anyone know the part number?

thanks

Re: 9.9 TO 18 HP

FJ - I bought a cam off Elvin for my 9.9 Nissan last year. Mine is also late 80's or early 90's (it's mainly dark blue with a silver/red/blue hood). All the cam does is allow the butterfly on the carb to open farther - but it does make quite a bit of difference on the top end. No rejetting required. Mine was a little bit of a pain since my model has the electric starter that I had to remove to get the bracket rotated around to remove the old cam.

BTW - The timing cam is directly behind the carburetor. Follow the linkage/wire thingy up and away from the carb. There is a plastic roller on othe end that rides against the cam itself.

You just need to contact any Nissan or Tohatsu dealer. I don't know of dealer who actually lists that particular part on an internet site, but they all have it.

Hey, BuckeyeBoater How did you get the cam off? When I try to remove the screws they hit the block. It looks almost like I will need to remove the pull start and flywheel. Did you need to do this?
