1975 ?rude 9.9 starter motor?.. Trying to remove nut on end of armature without messing up the armature. The shaft spins. Was thinking of wrapping a rag around the teeth and using vice grips or a vice to hold while I try to take the nut off. Just do not want to bust the teeth. I have it soaking in PB Blaster now. Anyone have a better idea? See attached photo?.

Are you certain that it is a counter clockwise removal nut. In other words is it left hand threaded? Look at the end of the threads and see which way do you have to turn the nut or remove it... And then wrap a rag around the larger portion of the armature and tighten in a vice (if you have one) and turn the nut off...

It's a right handed thread and you turn the nut counter clockwise to remove it. Left handed thread is just the opposite.

I have to say, you never stated why you wanted to remove that nut. Are you replacing the upper bushing or seal or ? If there is a reason, then go for it. Remember using the armature's largest diameter portion will work out better then the smaller teeth section. You won't have to tighten the larger section as tight to hold it while removing the nut. You could also cut out a circular wooden clamp to help hold it in the vice to protect the armature. Just cut a hole in any piece of thick wood just a little smaller then the diameter and then cut that in half to hold from both sides in the vice. Hope that helps... JMHO!

I will have a look at one of these starters to see if there is a simple way to take it off.--Usually there is.--Will report later today.

Update?.
I was checking the 2 switches, connections, and the brushes in the starter motor as per an older post suggestion because I was having some issues sometimes when I would try to start the motor and nothing would happen. Anyway, that nut must come off to put the motor back together after the brush end cap is removed (to check the brushes) as you cannot get the brushes back on otherwise. The motor was filled with carbon etc. so I cleaned it all out and lubricated the key parts as per service manual. That nut was a bear to take off (probably on for 40 years). I did use the rag method in a vice with the round pipe clamps of the vice and it did finally come off without messing up the armature too much. But the metal on the large part of the armature is soft so I had to be VERY careful when tightening the vice. After all is back together the nut must be put back on and tightened so I used a pair of needle nose vice grips to grab the armature shaft after squeezing the spring together(so as not to mess up the spring) because the shaft still rotates when you tighten the nut! Anyhow, the starter motor runs like a fine watch now and may be good for another 40?.
