I have 1996 9.9 Mercury that won't start unless I shot starter fluid in the card. I think I clean everything out. Any ideas on what else could be plugged up or did I miss something when I cleand the carb out.

Id say the best thing to do is buy a carb gasket set and rebuild the carb again. Even a small thing such as a split diaphram can cause these problems.

Re: 9.9 Mercury carb problem

I just cleaned out my carb on a 1999 9.9 4 stroke mariner. It fell into San Francisco Bay 4 years ago and sat until yesterday. I ordered a new carb but I coudn't wait to hear it run. The carb was FULL of salt crystals and corrosion. I pulled the float and the little plug it operates. I pulled the two brass "screws" inside the center of the carb and and the brass parts they hold in. I ran a small wire through all the small holes in the assembly. I shot it all with CLR to remove more of the scale and corrosion, then I shot it all thoroughly with carb cleaner and reassembled it ( I drained and replaced the oil and filter as well.) There was no corrosion in either cylinder. I was amazed when the motor started and ran on the 2nd pull, although rough at slow speeds, it starts and runs very well at all other speeds. I am going to replace the carb still, but I was happy to see the motor still works.

Re: 9.9 Mercury carb problem

If you disassembly the carb and put some fuel in the bowl, pump the primer, fuel should come out the small hole in the float bowl casting. I don't think you will get any because 1 off the 2 check valve in the primre is stuck, probably the 1 between the float bowl and primer and it can not be replaced so you will have to work on it with powertune and spray carb cleaner.

Re: 9.9 Mercury carb problem

I spent a few more hours on it yesterday and got it running. The cap srew on the bottom of the float bowl looks like it has some kind of jet in it. That was plugged. I got a can of sea foam and just soaked the whole crab over night. The liquid was clean the next morning it was brown. I put in a new gaskit kit it kicked off two pulls laters and just started again this morning.

Thanks for all the help

Ok, well I got over the part of the motor not starting, it won't keep running after it starts. when I choke the the motor to get it started and let it idel for a bit then push the choke in the motor shuts off with in seconds.

That is either idle speed or mixture adjustment I think.

What is the factory setup on the fule mixture. I went completely in and then start at 1..25 out to 2 and it still stalls out. Another question how long can you run the engine with out being in water?
