Noticed recently that I have exhaust coming out the small hole where the shift rod passes through on my 1987 9.9 Merc. Is this unusual? What's the cause?

Thanks

Bump

Anyone? Maybe this is normal and I just never noticed it before?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi,

It is pretty normal while idleing at the dock. Most of it should exit out the
idle relief holes in the back of the motor. Once under way it will exit out the center of the prop. There is an outside chance that a chunk of carbon has fallen into the lower unit and blocked the passage just above and around the bearing carrier. This only happens to motors that have been used for trolling all the time. It is easy to see by pulling of the prop and looking into the LU with a bright flash light. A coat hanger poked around in the pasage way may make you feel more comfortable. I would just use it and enjoy it.
