Re: 9.9.Johnson Won't Idle
I meant backing the throttle down enough to kill the engine with the tiller grip....assuming yours is being controled from the tiller handle. The twist grip at the handle does two thing. It moves the "magneto plate" to give you more or less timing and through the movement of the mag plate, to open or close the carb throttle vlv.

As far as a two stroke not idling well, I disagree a whole bunch. When tuned right, they idle just fine.

The knob on the front of the lower pan is the low idle knob. To adjust, run the low speed needle in until it just seats....DO NOT JAM..it will ruin the seat/needle. You will have to pull the knob to reposition it to do this. Then back out approx. 1 1/2 turns. Start the engine and warm up. Run at high speed for a few minutes to clear cylinders. Back the throttle down to slow. Make the needle adjustments by turning in needle about 1/8th turn in, at a time and wait for adjustment to take effect. Do this until the motor starts to get rough and then back out 1/4 turn. This is to keep the engine from running to lean at low speeds. You will get to a point where you will hear the idle speed pick up with the adjustment if the carb is in good shape.

If you need any more help or still have questions, don't hesitate to post. Lottsa' great wrench's on the site and are glad to help.
