Hello all. I just picked up a 94 Johnson 9.9 and it needs a little more work than I had hoped. First I have no controls with it so trying to figure out what is compatible.. The motor starts easy but can't get it to idle (and not sure where idle position even is ?). It's leaking gas in between pump and carb which I will fix first. I also noticed water leaking at the gasket on a housing at the rear of the motor. Found electric connector inside not hooked to anything. Not even sure where to begin, is there a parts diagram that can get me started available somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

dirtyb15, :welcome: to iboats. Glad you could join us...

Yes there are some break down diagrams you can look at. However I would buy the factory specific shop manual for you engine. Not an aftermarket version but the factory one. It covers everything you would ever want to know about your engine.

If you got to boats dot net, and type in your manufacturer and year and model number or HP you can look at all the break downs concerning your engine to get an idea how everything is assembled. Hope that helps you out a little.

Well.... opened up the thermostat housing and the t-stat is garbage, half missing, and someone siliconed the cover. It was pretty messy in the housing, any good tricks to clean it out? Hoping this is the reason i could not get the thing to idle... Debating on whether to pull the carb now too...

If the thermostat is messed up, what about the water pump impeller? May be time to go over the entire engine. And that includes the carb as well. JMHO!

I am new to outboards, so learning bear with me. Before I started taking it apart, it had a pretty good stream coming out so thinking the impeller is still okay? I will probably tackle everything this winter, but want to make sure i can get it running okay before sinking too much money in my "good deal".......
I already took the carb off and it looks like there were two fuel lines running to the carb? The smaller of the two was not hooked up, and it went to a tee, which is where the leak was. Someone actually threaded a screw into the broken tee to try and stop the leak...
