This motor was used in flooded areas and has had grass build up quite a bit that had to be cleared. Everything looks ok. Does it have a clutch or is something maybe stripped inside? It's a 1971 as far as I can tell.

Sounds like you spun the prop hub. Have it checked out at a Prop Shop to confirm.

7birdlimit,
You said "had grass build up quite a bit that had to be cleared. Everything looks ok."
Have you tried it in the water since you removed the grass? Slips after warming up, was that before or after cleaning?
I think you are ready to go.
If not do as Rick suggested.

Re: 9.9 Johnson prop slips after warming up

I had a chance to go out yesterday and it is happening when I try to give it too much power. I had it to about three quarters power, after about a 1/2 mile it slipped like it went out of gear. After that I could only do about quarter throttle. At one point I lost forward and reverse. I shut down, restarted and was able to putt back to where I launched. I think it has to be linkage or maybe the gear.
Thanks for the responces.

7birdlimit
Sounds like the exact systoms of a spun prop. Check the rubber hub of your prop see if it looks melted. Take the Prop nut off and then use a RED magic marker and draw a stright line from the prop accrossed the rubber to the center hub. Try and turn the prop with the motor in gear and see if it slipps. Take it for a spin then check the line. You will find no longer lined up because the rubber hub has slipped. This hub replaces the old sheer pin and is designed to slip if hit something or get something wapped around the prop. If it slips due to weed or something on the prop and you do not notice it right away the rubber will wear quick. After that will slip eaiser and eaiser until you can not go at all. You can have a new hub put in but on a prop that small I check the price for a new one also.
Where are you hunting, Sherman lake, Grizzley area. Get any Ducks.

7birdlimit
I'd check the model # on your motor. I'm showing the 9.9 HP starting in 1974. Check Below:

Props

And Here: (Use prop selector)

web page

Re: 9.9 Johnson prop slips after warming up

Thank you 7birdlimit :)
A '71? I think it is a '74 or later. There was no 9.9 hp in '71. Check your model number. Does it look like this: 10E74-10EL74? If it reads 10E75-10EL75 it is a '75 model and so on.
All model numbers here

Maintaining Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 & 15 hp outboards 1974-1992

Spun hub pictures and info

Some propeller sites
http://www.a1discountprop.com/
http://boatingsolutions.com/

I know you didn't ask, but I thought you might be interested. Take your prop to the Prop Shop and you'll be fine.
:)

Re: 9.9 Johnson prop slips after warming up

Thanks I will, The plate with the model number was to beat up to read all the numbers. (I had seen the code listing). I was going by the warranty card in the top of the case. I've had it since 80. I thought that was too old as I was seeing the 9.5's in the listings around that year. I guess the 71 didn't have anything to do with it, But that's what I get for not knowing What the h... I'm doing.

Thanks again for all the help !
