My mother-in-law's pontoon boat motor is on the fritz. It is an older 9.9 H.P. Johnson outboard (probably 1970's-ish with a serial # E4847372 and another number 10EL78. The label plate is hard to read and 1 or 2 numbers/letters I have here may be incorrect. It has always been reliable until recently when, while idling at dockside, the engine just abruptly stopped as if the ignitian was turned off-but wasn't. It has a new fuel pump and is getting plenty of fuel. I still need to check to see if its getting spark (when I can get a helping hand or go down to the boat at night), but while I was trying to start the engine the wire bundle started smoking approx 6 inches from (outside) the engine. A closer look revealed 1 red wire burnt in 2 and another black wire burnt nearly in 2. I cut and butt spliced both wires but the engine will not start (it does turn over normally). I think I may have taken out the power pack? How can I test for a bad power pack and if I need one, what is the part number (for that matter, can you tell me the year of her engine?) and what is a fair price for one. Also, does the power pack come with the wire leads (5 or 6 wires) that go from the engine to the egnition switch terminal (approx a 4 foot run of wires)? If not, what is the price for that? Thank You.
