I broke most of the shift lever off of my motor (hit a pole on the dock)
How do I remove the remaining bit of the lever? I cannot see any pins or clips to hold the lever on. I have an older evinrude that I would like to remove the lever from, it has a metal lever instead of the plastic of the Johnson.

I don't know how to remove it either. Do they just pull off?

Re: 9.9 Johnson 1985 Shift lever broke

Hi jonb...found yer post way down the list here...maybe I can help.

Your 85' 9.9 shift lever is connected to the shift rod via a clip and screw. You'll have to remove this and take the small bracket off that holds the shift lever link to the shift lever on the side of the engine. This is the easy one. Where the shift lever connects to the shift rod is darn near impossible to get to unless you pull the power head. To see this, remove the carb. Follow the shift lever shaft over and you will see what I mean. The shift lever will not come out until the shift rod is detached.

You mentioned another Rude you have that you want to scavange for parts. What year would it be?

Thanks for posting.

The evinrude is a 74. It's in better shape then the johnson, but it's a short shaft and I need a long shaft. I had hoped it would be easier to remove the lever. I can get it if I remove the carburator.

Thanks for the response.
