First off hello to all and thank you in advance for helping with my problem, I have searched around but have not found anything to help me yet. I bought a used Force 9.9 (1990 model I think) about two weeks ago. I took it out on Thursday it fired up on the second pull, rode around for 10 minutes and shut it down and fished for about two hours. Fired it up (second pull) roe for ten minutes, fish for two hours. Fired it up second pull again, was riding back to the dock got about twenty feet away and it quit, like it was out of gas. I loaded the boat and then noticed that I never opened the vent, the gas can was starting to cave in and the bulb was empty. I felt dumb but didn't think it was a big deal. I went out today put the boat in the water pulled the rope about twenty times. Nothing. Waited 30 minutes, twenty more pulls nothing. That was the patteren all day. I never got the motor started and now I have no skin left between my fingers. I got the motor home and this is what I tried, bear in mind I am no mechanic. Unplugged the fuel line and pressed the pin in, squeezed the bulb fuel shot out. Plugged the line back in pump the bulb and it got hard, unplugged the fuel line where it goes into the carb, cranked the motor and fuel ran out of the line. Checked the spark plugs and they are both clean, dry, and screwed in. The motor will fire and run for 32 or 3 seconds but will not continue to idle. If I try to throw it in gear or squeeze the bulb when it starts, the motor just shuts off. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. Please help me if you can. I was taking the week of to fish and am grounded on the first day. Thanks if advance.

Re: 9.9 Force Quit Working Today.. Please Help

Is there a filter or screen on the side of the motor where the fuel line
comes in? On my motor (a little bigger, 50hp) I have a screen & diaphram
on my fuel pump. When I got the motor, it wasn't running well so I pulled
that off and it was clogged. Not sure if you've got that, but it's worth
a try while you're waiting for one of the smarter guys to respond.
Good luck.

Welcome to iboats Joe.

First thing I would do is confirm that you have spark on both spark plugs.

Second thing to try - get a small spray bottle and put mixed fuel in it, Then spray a small amount into the carb, then try starting.

If it runs on the bottled gas, then it would be a good idea to disassemble and clean the carb.

Re: 9.9 Force Quit Working Today.. Please Help

Update - First off thanks for the replies I appreciate you guys taking the time to try and help. The first thing I tried this morning was replacing the spark plugs. I went to Napa and they didn't have the plug the manual called for but they did have the one that matched what I took out of the motor. Replaced both plugs and the motor fired right up. Idled for thirty seconds and cut off. Start again ran for thirty, cut off. So I pushed the choke back closed, started the motor, it ran for five minutes, I tried to put it in gear and it cut right off. I figured the carb. may need cleaning. Took that apart cleaned it ( it wasn't really dirty ) put it back together. And now I am back to not starting at all. I tried shooting mix gas with a spray bottle directly in the carb, but that didn't work either. The only thing I can figure is that I am still having a spark problem. Do you guys have any other ideas. The only thing I may have done wrong is when I put the carb back together I assume the float goes to the deep side of the bowl. Other than that everything looks right to me. My only other option is to take it to a service center. Which I was trying to avoid. Thanks for the help, I am open to any ideas.

I will also mention that when I unscrew the plugs and leave the boot on, I pull the cord to check for the spark and it doesn't spark every time. I don't know if I am not pulling hard enough, since my arms are twisted up holding all this stuff. Or that is indictive of the problem.

could have burne up the fuel pump and you sprayed to much gas in the carb for it to start. I know you have a pump connected to that fuel line somewhere. I would try that. If the plugs are clean, but it did run after the plug install would assume you have spark. Good ideal to check though. When you run it if it runs when you pump the blulb and the choke in combination i would say fuel. The carb shoul have been okay. You may have put it together wrong. Maybe some pics of the plugs and carb would help. I would check the pump next though.

Thanks for the reply, I am having a little trouble understanding what you are suggesting I do next. The fuel pump is ahead of the carb, I disconnected the fuel line from the carb and pulled the starter rope and fuel shoots out of the line. That indicates to me that the pump is pumping fuel. When the motor is running and about to shut off I tried squeezing the bulb or opening the choke. Neither of these things helped the motor keep running.
