Hello;
I am looking to find out if putting a 15 h.p. carb on my 1990 9.9 Evinrude would help it in anyway. Any help or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Plmbr

1990 is one of the few years that changing the carb will make/add some horepower. Whether you'll actually attain the 5 hp difference is anyone's guess - but, it will probably come close. Assuming that's the "help" you're looking for.

-John

To get the full 5hp you'd have to add the 15hp exhaust tuner, as well... What goes in must come out...
- Scott

Sorry, but 1990 model 9.9 & 15's use the same tuner. I'm looking at the micro-fiche right now, both use p/n 330440.

-John

John:

Would the same Carb conversion be possible on a Johnson CJ10REIR?

According to the parts microfiche 1990, 1991 & 1992 models all use the same carbs. I see no differences in the intake manifold, the exhaust tuner, block or reed plate.

-John

Re: 9.9 evinrude carb.info

John:

It was my understanding that the inner exhaust tuner was changed in 1981 so that changing the carb would not increase the horsepower.

That info was found at this link http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm

I'd love for this to be incorrect and your info correct so I could get more power out of my 9.9

Re: 9.9 evinrude carb.info

Mike,

That's a long read, but I did take a few minutes to review the parts fiche a little closer.

I compared both 9.9 & 15 models from 1990, 1991 & 1992.

The following parts use the exact same p/n for both hp's in all 3 years:

Reed plate: 390050
Inner exhaust: 330440
Cylinder & crankcase: 396010
Cylinder head: 432765

The only part numbers that changed were complete carburetor assemblies. On closer inspection, the differences between 9.9 & 15 carbs are the carb body (most likely the inside diameter of venturi) and the jetting.

These are the most common "different" parts to obtain the hp differences. If there are other small differences, they didn't jump out at me.

I would suggest finding a local friendly dealer who might allow you to look thru the 1991 parts catalog/micro-fiche and you can make a more detailed search, it does appear though that the only difference is the carbs.

-John

If it is like the 20 - 25 and 35 HP models, the extra breething on a 15 will need around 2 deg more spark advance.

Someone with the right manual can confirm this or correct me.

Thanks John. Appreciate you taking the time. May be worth a trip to the local dealer over the holidays.
