i recently acquired a 1978 9.9 johnson. there were four wires coming out of the front of the motor, two large gauge wires-1 red and one black, and two smaller wires, one coming from the kill button on the front housing and the other coming from inside the motor. i am not sure how these wires hooked up before i got it and i would like to wire it up on my boat as a kicker motor. can someone fill me in on where the wires should connect to? does anyone know the correct way to wire this up?
thanks
mike
forgot to add the model number 10EL78M, if this tells more about the engine

Re: 9.9 electric start wiring?

The large red and black leads are the battery connections. The lead on the kill button should go back to the amphenol connector that comes from the power pack. The other lead from the kill button should go to ground.

If the engine is equipped with charging, there would also be a red lead from the rectifier to the red battery connection. This connection is made at the push to start button.

Does this cover it Mike?

Re: 9.9 electric start wiring?

i am not sure what you mean by the power pack. the boat had a key start, would it come from that or do i need to get something else. i am currently looking for a manual for it, but your site doesnt list any here. i do remember seeing a red wire, larger than the smaller wires coming from the motor, so this would be for charging and gets connected to the red lead of the battery. thanks, this gets me some good information to work with.
